SOCK HAIKU
Soft and quiet, the morning begins,
With a stretch, a yawn, and the day's gentle spin.
But before the shoes, the boots, or the walk,
Comes the ritual moment: the slipping on of socks.
First, they lie there, folded and neat,
A perfect pair waiting to meet my feet.
Cotton, wool, or the silk of delight,
Ready to cradle, to hug, and hold tight.
I lift one up, feel the fabric so fine,
Slide it over my toes, like a whispered line.
The heel finds its place, snug as can be,
An embrace so simple, yet it comforts me.
The right one follows, a twin to its mate,
Together they shield me from cold, guard my gait.
With each soft layer, I feel more complete,
Like armor that’s woven, from ankle to feet.
In winter, they're warmth against bitter chill,
Thick woolen protectors, up high on the hill.
In summer, they’re light, a breeze on my skin,
Thin, airy companions where the day may begin.
Patterns that play, stripes or polka dots bright,
In vibrant colors, they dance in the light.
Or perhaps something plain, a solid, a tone,
In their quiet way, they still feel like home.
Invisible sometimes, beneath shoes they hide,
Yet they carry my steps, my journeys, my stride.
On hardwood, on carpet, on gravel or grass,
My socks are my partners in each step I pass.
There’s something of comfort in their gentle hold,
A story they tell that’s quiet but bold.
In slippers, in sneakers, or barefoot at last,
My socks are companions in the day’s quiet cast.
And when day is done, and the night draws near,
I peel them off slowly, with tenderness dear.
Fold them again, with care they deserve,
For tomorrow they’ll wait, with their comforting curve.
Oh, the simple joy, the humble pair,
Worn with such purpose, with love and with care.
From dawn to dusk, as I walk through the clock,
I’m forever grateful for the gift of the sock.
